The 1928 Summer Olympics

The 1928 summer Olympics was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This was the first Olympic year that the torch was lit. This was also the first time that the parade of nations took place with Greece in the lead and ended with the host country. The athletic events were held on a 400 meter track. This is now the standard track size. The featured games were held on a 16 day schedule. With many companies advertising, this is the first appearance of a Coca-Cola as a sponsor.

The Presidential Elections of Herbert Hoover and Alfred Smith

The 1928 Presidential elections were between Herbert Hoover (R) and Alfred Smith (D). During this time period there were many events that were involved with this election including: religion, prohibition, business and agriculture. Hoover came up with the slogan, "A car in every garage and a chicken in every pot." He wants Americans to have what they need. His idea was for every American to live the American Dream. With Smith he went for more of the cultural differences for Americans. In this election the winner was without a doubt, Hoover. Hoover won with 444 Electoral College votes were Smith only had 59 votes.

Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union

In 1928 this is when Joseph Stalin wanted to start his five-year- plan. As the Russian dictator at the time with is when he wanted to see great change for Russia. He had a set plan to help strengthen the economic and social goals of Russia. This was mainly affecting the peasants of Russia. As the five-year- plan begun to take way there were some major difficulties in agriculture and industry. Many farms started to begin to suffer with having to turn over their farms to Stalin. The private land owners of Russia wanted to revolt and not give up their land or animals. So in return the Russian government took force. They shot groups of peasants in large numbers and took people from their homes. Like the United States there was a problem with labor laws in the industrial business. Many workers were unhappy with the conditions. With Stalin being addicted to power and wanting to take over such a large area in a short span of time there were some consequences including a food shortage.

Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse

Walt Disney was an American movie producer whose focus was in animated cartoons. In 1928 one of his biggest characters was created, Mickey Mouse. The two large feature films that he made including Mickey Mouse were Crazy Plane and Steamboat Willie. This is when Disney created the idea of making a cartoon by using more than one tool to make animated movement. With this creation of animation and the character Mickey Mouse it leads him to do more incredible things in the industry. Disney was also the first person to try and put a sound in with his characters. Some of the early sounds were of his voice. By 1935 Disney’s Mickey Mouse was seen by 500 million moviegoers.

The Creation of Penicillin

In 1875, John Tyndall reported that a Penicillium species caused bacteria to burst. It wasn’t until 1928 when Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillium’s antibacterial properties. Fleming found that in his petri dish an odd form of bacteria spread except near a piece of mold. Fleming grew this mold in a pure form and called it Penicillin. Fleming and other chemist tried to purify Penicillin to make it work better. Even in large amounts what they had now wouldn’t work to its fullest on even experimental animals. It took about eleven more years to put the medicine into action. With this medicine it has saved many lives for people going to war.
